Andris Vītoliņš

Senior Environmental Tourism Specialist

Pesoe SIA

"The Daugava delta isn't just a river system — it's a living classroom. Every island, every wetland path tells a story about how nature adapts and survives. We're here to make sure older adults get to read those stories firsthand, safely and meaningfully."

— Andris Vītoliņš

With over 14 years developing accessible outdoor experiences in Latvia's protected ecosystems, Andris brings together rigorous environmental science with genuine understanding of what makes exploration rewarding for senior visitors. His work focuses on removing barriers — both physical and informational — so that anyone can experience the remarkable natural areas surrounding Riga.

Professional Path

From Research to Accessible Exploration

2004–2008

Education in Environmental Science

Completed degree in Environmental Management at Latvijas Universitāte. Thesis focused on biodiversity patterns in riverine ecosystems, with emphasis on the Daugava delta region.

2008–2012

Environmental Agency Documentation Work

Worked with the Latvian Environment Agency documenting biodiversity across protected delta areas. Conducted over 150 field surveys, established baseline ecological data, and created detailed species inventories for regulatory compliance and conservation planning.

2012–2016

Founding Accessible Tourism Initiatives

Recognized a gap in nature access for older adults. Started developing safer pathways and accessible routes through Daugava islands and Ķīšezera shoreline. Worked directly with municipalities on trail maintenance and accessibility standards. Launched first guided programs for seniors in 2014.

2016–Present

Senior Specialist at pesoe SIA

Oversees content development, program design, and guide training for senior-focused nature exploration. Has led over 300 guided expeditions. Combines scientific knowledge with accessibility expertise to create meaningful experiences that don't compromise on either front.

Core Specializations

Areas of Deep Knowledge

Developed through years of field work, research, and direct engagement with local ecosystems and senior visitors

Daugava Delta Ecosystems

Extensive knowledge of the river delta's hydrology, seasonal flooding patterns, vegetation zones, and wildlife communities. Can explain how water movement shapes the landscape and what to look for in different seasons.

Island Navigation & Safety

Intimate knowledge of all accessible Daugava islands, their terrain, hazards, and best routes. Knows where the soft ground is, which paths flood first, and where seniors should take extra care — because he's mapped every meter personally.

Ķīšezera Shoreline Paths

Detailed understanding of the accessible walking routes around Ķīšezera lake. Can recommend paths suited to different fitness levels, identify rest points with actual benches, and knows where water quality is safest for observation.

Wildlife & Bird Identification

Can identify over 100 bird species found in the region, knows their seasonal patterns, and understands where to spot them. Also knowledgeable about mammals, fish, and insects that characterize these habitats.

Accessibility Planning & Implementation

Works directly with local authorities to establish accessible trails, rest areas, and interpretive signage. Understands mobility limitations firsthand and designs experiences that don't feel like compromises.

Environmental Interpretation & Education

Makes complex ecological concepts accessible and genuinely interesting. Doesn't just point out species — explains why they're there, what they're doing, and why it matters for the broader ecosystem.

Philosophy

How Andris Approaches Every Experience

Real Knowledge, Not Just Stories

Every detail shared comes from field research and direct observation. He doesn't guess about what birds nest where or when water levels peak. He's documented it. Visitors get the real story, not simplified folklore.

Safety Without Stress

Careful planning means visitors can focus on enjoying the experience, not worrying. Routes are chosen specifically for accessibility, hazards are identified and managed, and guides know how to adjust pace without making it awkward.

No Shortcuts on Accessibility

Doesn't treat accessibility as an afterthought or limitation. Instead, it's the starting point for program design. Everyone deserves to see the delta properly — not rushed, not stressed, not feeling like a burden.

Respect for the Ecosystem

The goal isn't just to visit nature — it's to understand why these areas matter and how visitors can help protect them. Every expedition includes stewardship elements without feeling preachy.
